The south coast Squamish Nation is studying a proposed LNG project through its traditional territory.
The nation is working with technical experts to gather scientific data around the potential impacts and risks.
They will compare their findings with those from the federal and provincial governments.
The First Nation held a community meeting last night as part of an independent assessment of a proposed Woodfibre LNG plant and natural gas pipeline expansion.
Chief Ian Campbell says the community won’t allow outsiders to decide its future, and the nation plans to hold its own vote on the project.
