BC Hydro has released a mitigation and compensation framework for its Site C dam project.
The framework includes four components, one of which is $20-million going into an agricultural compensation fund.
In a release, BC Hydro says the fund will directly benefit agriculture in the region, and the utility will work with the Agriculture Ministry and establish a board to administer the fund.
A final plan will be ready by July of next year.
BC Hydro says the dam will provide clean electricity for more than 100 years once it’s completed in 2024.
Critics of the Site C project say 31,500 acres of agricultural land and 17,000 acres of forested land will be destroyed for an unnecessary mega project.
