Aboriginal high school graduation rates rising, but still behind provincial average

The number of aboriginal students graduating from BC high schools is climbing steadily, but still trails far behind general graduation rates across the province.

Latest data from the Ministry of Education shows the six-year completion rate for aboriginal students reached an all-time high of 63% in the 2014-15 school year — a leap of 9% over five years.

But that’s still well below the average six-year completion rate of 84% for all BC students.

A new public school curriculum is being phased in across BC over the next three years and ministry officials hope the program — described as flexible and innovative — will help students succeed and boost graduation rates even further.
