A group is raising concerns about how easy it is for mining companies to stake claims for mineral exploration on properties.
The First Nations Women Advocating Responsible Mining says they were able stake a claim on the BC Mining Minister’s property for $130 and little paper work.
Coordinator Jacinda Mack says they wanted to start a conversation about the current rules in place.
Stikine MLA Doug Donaldson is the opposition leader on mining.
He says that better planning needs to be in place with First Nations heavily involved in the process.
Minister of Energy and Mines Bill Bennet says he understands the message they’re sending, but notes it would take a lot more before they could even consider digging up the area. He says he’ll continue to work with First Nations to ensure the process is done in a fair and respectful manner.
