The Ahousat First Nation and the District of Tofino were honoured today with the province’s newest award.
The Medal of Good Citizenship was presented by Premier Christy Clark in a ceremony on Meares Island.
The two communities are being recognized for their actions during the sinking of the Leviathan II last October.
The whale watching ship capsized off Tofino with 26 passengers on board, six of them died in the incident.
The medal was launched last year and recognizes exceptional and outstanding acts of selfless service and contribution.
It’s the first time the award has been bestowed on communities instead of individuals.
