The Mayor of Kitimat has issued an open letter about the stalled state of talks to end a prolonged strike by the community’s municipal workers.
Members of Unifor local 2300 have been on the picket lines since February 28th and Mayor Phil Germuth says both sides recognize that they have reached an impasse.
In the letter issued Thursday, Germuth says another course of action must be pursued if a deal is to be reached.
The mayor says the district has asked the union to reconsider the final offer presented February 26th.
Germuth says if the offer is not accepted by Sunday, April 12th, it will be withdrawn.
He says the District of Kitimat will hire an external negotiator with the mandate to conclude a final agreement and will have the mandate to seek mediation or arbitration.
The main sticking points in the bitter dispute, which has raged for nearly six weeks, are wages and workplace issues.
