An area to the north of Haida Gwaii has been declared a critical habitat for Northern Resident Killer Whales.
In total, just under 14 hundred square kilometres are now protected under the country’s species-at-risk laws.
Now, the DFO will be able to undergo extra efforts to avoid numerous threats to the Killer Whale’s population, including: shipping noise, pollution, and a lack of food.
According to the DFO, there is no area more frequently visited by killer whale groups during the spring and winter months.
