The company behind a troubled mine on Banks Island has decided to suspend all operations for now.
Banks Island Gold says that it has put the Yellow Giant Gold Mine into care and maintenance until regulatory issues and permitting can be sorted out and the company has enough working capital to re-start.
The BC environment ministry slapped Banks Island Gold with a pollution abatement order last month after a tailings and effluent spill and then followed up with a shutdown order.
The operations are within the traditional territory of the Gitxaala Nation, which has demanded the company clean up and get out.
The environment ministry say an analysis of the discharge indicates no risk to human or animal health.
Banks Island Gold says the mine provided jobs for over 100 people and indirect employment for many families that depend on the mine operating.
The company says it will provide more information on the mine’s suspension when it becomes available.
