Cameron Bell is with the Misty Isles Economic Development Society.
He says any cut in prices is good for locals and tourists.
But he adds that fare prices aren’t the only issue.
He says that service levels also have a major impact on the local economy.
In a statement, BC Ferries CEO and President Mike Corrigan says the plan is for variable fare pricing to be rolled out in 2017.
This current promotion will help BC Ferries gather data on travel patterns.
Corrigan also says there will be promo prices for the late fall and next spring.
BC Ferries is reporting increased net earnings for the first quarter of fiscal 2016, as well as increased foot and vehicle traffic.
Prices on southern routes will get a 50% discount during off-peak travel times.
