Dr. Daniele Behn Smith has been appointed the aboriginal health physician adviser to the provincial health officer.
The position will provide independent advice and support to the Ministry of Health on First Nations and Aboriginal health issues.
Dr. Behn Smith says she hopes to improve aboriginal health outcomes, which are still below those of other British Columbians.
She’s from the Fort Nelson First Nation, and has an extensive background in aboriginal healthcare.
Behn Smith says that in her new position, she can bring an aboriginal perspective to health issues.
She was also the host of “Medicine Woman,” a television series series that explored traditional healing practices in ten countries on six continents.
Calling the experience transformative, she says she learned from traditional healers that health and wellness is about balance, gratitude, humility and respect; teachings she says, that guide her everyday.
