A first of its kind reconciliation agreement has been reached between the provincial government and the shíshálh Nation.
The agreement is the first major reconciliation agreement reaced between the province and a First Nation.
Under the agreement, the two parties will work together to protect the environment, as well as promote economic opportunity and growth for the shíshálh Nation.
36 million dollars in funding will be provided by the provincial government to go towards land purchases and implementation costs.
On top of that, 3 parcels of Crown Land adjacent to the Nation’s territory will be transfered to be used for economic development purposes.
Further economic and socio-cultural investments will also be made by the government.
The landmark deal presents a new frameworkd model that could pave the way for further reconciliation agreements.
