BC won’t be sending any firefighters to Fort McMurray, but forests minister Steve Thomson says the province will be sending equipment.
Premier Christy Clark says BC crews have their hands full with dozens of fires burning in the province’s northeast.
Clark says if the Siphon Creek wildfire does spread east toward Alberta, crews will take the unusual step of following it.
She says the goal is not to add another burden to Alberta firefighters.
Humans are getting the blame for almost all of the 85 wildfires currently burning in BC, including the 60 blazing in the province’s Peace River region.
BC Wildfire Service spokesman Kevin Skrepnek says human carelessness is compounded by conditions such as the dead, dry, post-winter grasses of northeastern BC, that haven’t had a chance to green-up since the snow melted.
He says conditions in the northeast are similar to those in Fort McMurray, where a wildfire has destroyed homes and forced the evacuation of more than 50-thousand people.
