A BC member of Parliament is hoping a petition will help garner support for liquefied natural gas projects in his riding.
Prince George – Peace River – Northern Rockies MP Bob Zimmer presented an e-petition with about 1,900 signatures to the House of Commons yesterday.
The petition started by a resident in the riding says they want LNG projects like the Pacific Northwest to stimulate the economy and make Canada a global leader in clean energy.
While some critics believe the PNW LNG project will have a negative impact on the environment, Zimmer believes it’s a clean option.
He believes petitions will have an influence.
The federal Liberal cabinet is set to meet in Ottawa today to consider the final environmental assessment of the Pacific Northwest LNG project, proposed just south of Prince Rupert.
Critics of the plan say the project has the potential to threaten salmon runs on the second-largest fish-bearing river in BC, but proponents say it will create jobs and bring in royalties.
