New changes to the hunting season in Haida Gwaii are now in effect.
The Ministry of Forests have announced the changes to black bear hunting rules that took effect at the beginning of the month.
The changes mean that the black bear open hunt in Haida Gwaii is officially closed, and in its place is a limited entry system.
The system will require those wishing to hunt black bears to apply for a limited entry hunting authorization with the 2018 hunting lottery.
The system hopes to help wildlife managers ensure that the 4 black bear per year harvest limit is not exceeded.
Hunters have until the last week of April to apply for authorization.
