Bomb squad called to Prince Rupert over suspicious package

Prince Rupert RCMP called in the Explosives Disposal Unit from Vancouver to deal with a suspicious package over the weekend.

Mounties say the package was reported to police at approximately 3 pm Saturday afternoon. The suspicious item was located in a dumpster in an alley along the 300 block 2nd Street between 2nd Avenue West and 1st Avenue West.

Sergeant Dave Uppal says the alley was cordoned off to ensure public safety, which he says is likely what started the rumour mill about a body being discovered.

Uppal says the Explosives Disposal Unit transported the package to a safe location where it was detonated.

He says there was no secondary explosion, leading investigators to believe that the package was not a threat.

However, Uppal says if you do notice something suspicious, it is important to contact the RCMP.
