In this day and age of reduce, reuse and recycle, it is becoming harder to scavenge from local dumps for good, re-usable material and more communities are restricting the ability to scavenge
The Terrace and Thornhill dump sites prohibit picking through the stuff other people toss and the Regional District of Bulkley Nechako has join the non-scavenge list.
Officials says metal will no longer be available to scavenger while the site will get a designated wood salvage zone.
The regional district made the move to stop metal scavenger as of September 17th. The regional district says the move to stop the removal of metal and other materials has been undertaken as a protection against injuries to the public, even though everyone who uses the dump site does so at their own risk.
As far as the regional district is concerned, any material dropped off becomes the property of the district. Fines range from $500 to $10 thousand dollars and offenders can be prevented from dumping material at the site for a set period of time.
The district will be erecting signs at the dump to let people know policies and penalties while the special designated wood area will also be signed.
