The Bulkley Valley School District is considering closing Lake Kathryn Elementary School due to low enrollment.
At a board meeting yesterday, the board gave notice of their consideration to close the school.
This activates a 60-day public consultation period, in which the public can provide input.
In a release, the board says they were committed to keeping the small community school open for several years despite low enrollment.
But continuing low enrollment at that school, and declining enrollment in the general district, means keeping the school open is now financially unsustainable.
A final decision by the board will be made at a special board meeting on April 12th at 6:30pm at Lake Kathlyn Elementary.
There will be public meetings with the board and district administration at Lake Kathlyn Elementary School on February 4th at 6:30 pm, and at the Moricetown Multi-Plex on March 8th at 6:30 pm.
