Bumper oolichan run in Nass Valley

The Nisga’a Lisims Fisheries and Wildlife Department is reporting a bumper year for oolichan in the Nass Valley.

Edward Desson is with the department and says while they’re still gathering data on numbers, people are telling him it’s a very strong year.

Desson says things are winding down now as the camps start rendering the oolichan oil.

He says there was one year when the river froze up and very few oolichans were harvested, and speculates that meant many more were able to spawn, leading to this year’s strong run.
