The 2018 wildfire season will officially go down as the worst in BC history in terms of area burnt, but the numbers have been kinder to a Cariboo Region that was nearly overwhelmed last year.
To date, the Cariboo Regional District has seen 63 thousand 860 hectares scorched by fires in 2018, a farcry from last year’s 816 thousand.
While the district has seen significantly less damage from the flames, it has actually had more fires this year with 305, compared to 268 last season.
On top of being able to limit the damage, the Wildfire Service seems to have gotten its message across to residents as well with 40 less human caused fires this year compared to 2017.
