Hazelton native Carol Huynh will assist in leading Canada’s Olympic Team at the Brazil Games next year.
The two-time Olympic medallist was named Canada’s Assistant Chef de Mission for the 2016 Rio games at a news conference Tuesday morning.
Huynh made history at the 2008 Beijing games when she took gold in women’s freestyle wrestling in the 48kg category, Canada’s first-ever Olympic medal in women’s wrestling.
She won bronze at the 2012 London Olympic games and is an 11-time Canadian champion, a two-time Pan American champion, a Commonwealth champion, and a four-time medallist at the World Wrestling Championship.
Huynh, the daughter of two Vietnamese refugees who settled in Hazelton after coming to Canada in the 1970s, began wrestling at 15.
Canadian Olympic Committee president Tricia Smith says Huynh brings a wealth of experience to the team and will be someone Canadian athletes can look up to on their journey to Rio.
