Chiefs throw cold water on provincial legislation

BC First Nations chiefs have thrown cold water on a BC environment ministry presentation on the Water Sustainability Act.

The legislation, which allows the province to manage surface and groundwater, was vehemently rejected and criticized by members attending the Union of BC Indian Chiefs Annual General Assembly Tuesday.

UBCIC President, Grand Chief Stewart Phillip says there was no consultation with First Nations before the act was passed and calls government’s actions paternalistic and condescending.

Phillip says the Union of BC Indian Chiefs has written to Premier Christy Clark reminding her that First Nations water rights are non-negotiable in the wake of the Tsilhqot’in decision at the Supreme Court of Canada.
