Children’s rep calls on attorney general to review Metis toddler’s adoption

BC’s representative for children and youth says Attorney General Suzanne Anton must intervene in the case of a Metis toddler being adopted to non-aboriginal parents in Ontario.

Mary Ellen Turpel-Lafond says she is acting on advice from three leading Metis cultural experts and believes that the little girl’s heritage has not been given adequate consideration.

The nearly three-year-old child has been in the custody of a Metis foster mother and her husband but their bid to adopt the girl was rejected by the BC Court of Appeal last week.

Turpel-Lafond says she wants the Attorney General to delay the child’s transition to Ontario for about a month so full indigenous consultation can take place.

  1. I was thwarted by my daughter’s father in finding out about how I could bring his son home to us to live and have his baby sister grow up with him. I’d love to find out how I can establish communication and let him know that someone from his extended family wanted him. He has since been adopted out of foster care in Saskatchewan I believe.

I was told that since I was the mother of one of his siblings, that I would have a right to ask for custody. Is this correct?
