Coastal First Nations react to the federal government’s ocean protection plan

The federal government has announced a national plan to protect oceans and coastlines at a cost of $1.5-billion.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Transport Minister Marc Garneau announced details in Vancouver.

Boosting the Coast Guard presence and enhancing oil spill cleanup research are some the measures that will be put in place.

Coastal First Nations Chair Kelly Russ believes this is a good first step and is happy First Nations will play a role in protecting the coasts.

Russ is hoping a moratorium will be eventually put in place on tanker traffic.

During the announcement, Prime Minister Trudeau didn’t rule out eventually putting a moratorium on tanker traffic.
