Prince Rupert RCMP is warning the public about what it describes as a very sophisticated cyber scam that has already victimized a local company.
Investigators say an employee opened a zip file disguised as a resume contained in an email.
When opened, the email unleashed a virus which infected the entire company’s database and encrypted all of its files.
The company later received file which demanded $500 U.S. in bitcoins in order to to decrypt the files.
RCMP, in coordination with the Integrated Technological Crime Unit, determined that there was no way to decrypt the files or remove the virus that was identified as “CryptoWall 3.0” by Microsoft.
RCMP is warning businesses and individuals not to open similar “.zip” files that they may receive in emails.
If you do receive a similar email, you should contact the RCMP.
