North Coast salmon fishermen aren’t happy as they face DFO’s announcement about a potential closure of the commercial salmon fishery.
Blaming low stock, DFO estimates returns are going to be too low to allow a commercial fishery.
United Fishermen & Allied Workers Union Northern Representative Joy Thorkelson believes climate change is playing a role in the decline.
Thorkelson is hoping the DFO continues to study impacts to ensure improvements can be made.
She does note while the sock-eye may not look promising at this time, she says pink salmon is looking good.
Thorkelson is also hoping the DFO estimates are off. She say predictions in the past had the count of sockeye off by over a million.
