The Skeena Watershed Conservation Coalition is expressing concern after a train derailment near New Hazelton Friday.
CN says 27 cars on the westbound train derailed near Mission Creek at approximately 8:00 in the morning
The company says there were no reports of injuries and no dangerous goods were involved.
The Skeena Watershed Conservation Coalition says at least one of the cars has overturned in Mission Creek, damning the flow of the stream with coal.
The Coalition describes the creek has having high value for Salmon. Mission Creek runs into the Bulkley River just upstream of where the Bulkley joins with with the Skeena. Water sampling of the area is under way.
The group says it’s not sure of the long-term impact on salmon, but much work has been done to bolster struggling Coho stocks in the past number of years.
CN says emergency response crews, including environmental teams, are responding to assess the situation and start the clean-up.
The cause of the derailment is under investigation.
