Smithers town council has approved the design and budget for upgrades to the Smithers Airport.
Airport Manager Rob Blackburn says the upgrades will make operations run more efficiently.
He says a new ergonomic design will be more convenient for passengers.
Blackburn says the design has both Smithers and the surrounding area in mind.
The project is slated to cost $8.17-million with money coming from local grants and reserves as well as the federal gas tax grant.
Blackburn says construction should start in May or June if everything moves forward on schedule.
