Fraudsters are at it again, this time victimizing a person from Kitimat.
Kitimat RCMP say last Friday a person was intimidated into sending money to a person in Edmonton claiming to be from the Canada Revenue Agency.
The person sent the money through a 3rd party money transaction company.
Despite sending money already, the person then contacted the RCMP before sending more money because they felt something was wrong.
Unfortunately this scam is common enough that the CRA has an extensive website explaining it.
The Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre says this type of scam is either “phishing” for personal information, or to get the victim to handover money.
If contacted by anyone claiming to be from the CRA, don’t give out any information, and contact the CRA directly if you have any concerns.
