Skeena-Bulkley Valley MP Nathan Cullen believes that there is still a chance for Canada to get US aluminum tariffs thrown out.
Democratic members of the US Congress have suggested that they will withhold support for the new USMCA trade agreement barring significant changes.
According Cullen, who recently met with Unifor reps from the Rio Tinto plant in Kitimat, this represents an opportunity to have the tariffs removed before Canada commits to the agreement.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has hinted that it may be possible to have the tariffs removed before this month’s G-20 meeting.
Meanwhile, Kitimat local Unifor President Martin McIlwrath says his union will support the government, should they refuse to sign the agreement.
Roughly 50 percent of aluminum produced in Kitimat goes to the US.
