Skeena-Bulkley Valley MP Nathan Cullen is concerned about rail safety in the northwest given the announcement of another propane export facility in Prince Rupert.
While the NDP MP is generally upbeat about Pembina’s plans for an LPG facility on the North Coast, he’s never been satified about the state of rail safety in Canada.
With the railway running right through many Northwest communitues, Cullen says new terminals will mean more volatile cargo on those tracks.
Cullen says he has spoken with the Federal Transport Minister about the Pembina propane project, the potential increased risk, and what government will do to mitigate the risk along the rail lines.
He says the Federal Liberals haven’t come up with anything specific to deal with this particular project. but he expects more to come
While Ottawa rolled out a rail safety plan in the wake of the Lac Megantic disaster, Cullen says it was short on action.
