Skeena Bulkley Valley MP Nathan Cullen has invited the new federal fisheries minister to Northwest B.C.
Cullen says he wants Jonathan Wilkinson to hear directly from residents about the critical state of salmon stocks.
“Yesterday I invited the new minister to visit the Northwest and meet with representatives from Indigenous, recreational and commercial fishing sectors to hear first hand how difficult this year’s fishing season is,” added Cullen in a news release.
While Cullen he’s happy the government has appointed a West Coast MP as fisheries minister, the first time it’s done so since 1999, Cullen hopes that Wilkinson will act on what he describes as a crisis in the Northwest related to plummeting salmon stocks and a tight fishing quota this summer.
Cullen says immediate action is needed to deal with the dismal situation on the West Coast.
