Skeena Bulkley Valley MP Nathan Cullen has accused the Conservative government of disregarding the health of Indigenous communities across Canada.
Cullen says Auditor General Michael Ferguson’s report on access to health for First Nations found that Health Canada is falling far short of the mark on a number of its obligations to First Nations communities.
The report focused on the state of care and facilities for remote aboriginal communities in Ontario and Manitoba.
Cullen says the problem was compounded by the Harper government decision to cut the National Aboriginal Health Organization and pull $100 million in transfer payments to the provinces three years ago.
The report also found that Health Canada is not meeting its objective of making sure First Nations people in remote communities get comparable access to care as other provincial residents in remote communities.
