Skeena Bulkley Valley MP Nathan Cullen is calling on the Prime Minister to stand by his promise to institute an oil tanker ban on BC’s north coast.
The NDP Environment and Climate Change critic says there’s been a shift by the federal government from a pledge to formalize the tanker ban to being evasive and non-committal on the issue.
Cullen, who wrapped up a visit to Haida Gwaii Monday, says Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s hints of a weaker moratorium and a potential backtrack on opposition to the Northern Gateway proposal would spell disaster for Ottawa’s attempts to establish a government-to-government relationship with First Nations.
Trudeau and his Cabinet are attending a retreat in Alberta where they heard about the importance of pipelines from Premier Rachel Notley.
Transport Minister Marc Garneau says the federal government remains committed to a crude oil tanker ban.
