David Bowie is being remembered as a trendsetter in music and fashion.
Tributes are continuing to pour in for the legendary singer, who died of cancer yesterday at the age of 69. Canadian performers including The Weeknd, Seth Rogen, Will Arnett and former astronaut Chris Hadfield praised Bowie on social media.
Fashion journalist and T-V host Jeanne Beker says Bowie helped to elevate T-V visuals with his theatrical music videos.
Beker says Bowie was a performance artist who understood the importance of imagery. She says he also pushed the envelope with creative costumes and gender-bending fashions. Bowie toured with Montreal-based dance group La La La Human Steps more than 25 years ago. The group’s founder (Edouard Lock) says the late singer dared to tread where few others would.
Bowie’s latest album “Blackstar” was released just days before his death.
A statement posted to Bowie’s Facebook page said that “January 10 2016 – David Bowie died peacefully today surrounded by his family after a courageous 18 month battle with cancer. While many of you will share in this loss, we ask that you respect the family’s privacy during their time of grief.”
