Predicted low sockeye returns have led to a closure of the Skeena River.
The Department of Fisheries and Oceans has closed recreational salmon fishing throughout the entire Skeena River Watershed effective immediately.
DFO says the closure is being implemented to facilitate First Nations harvesting of other Skeena salmon species due to low returns of Skeena sockeye this year. Sport fishing for salmon will be closed until July 14th, 2017.
The DFO says recreational, commercial, and First Nations food, social, and ceremonial harvesting of sockeye will be closed for the 2017 season unless there is an indication of increased sockeye numbers.
Recreational opportunities for Skeena coho, pink, and chinook will reopen July 15th
