The Department of Fisheries and Oceans has opened a commercial herring fishery despite a tribal ban.
DFO opened the herring sac roe seine fishery in Spiller Channel on Sunday, even though the Heiltsuk Nation announced last week it would close the fishery.
Marilyn Slett is Chief Councillor of the Heiltsuk Tribal Council, she says DFO’s assessment methods are flawed.
Slett says there will be a community meeting tonight to decide the next step.
The herring fishery threatens the Heiltsuk Nation’s spawn on kelp harvest.
The nation has voluntarily suspended it’s own community herring licenses for the season so the stock can rebuild.
