The Department of Fisheries and Oceans says herring stocks can support a harvest.
The Heiltsuk Nation has voiced it’s objections to opening the commercial herring roe fishery yesterday.
In a written response, the DFO says science forecasts have shown that the Pacific Herring stock can support modest commercial harvest opportunities while meeting DFO’s conservation objectives.
The department says it opens roe fisheries in consultation with on-grounds industry advisors to provide reasonable fishing opportunities.
The statement also says the DFO continues to have dialogue with the members of the local First Nations.
