The Department of Fisheries and Oceans says Chinook salmon are facing unprecedented challenges right across the northeast Pacific.
DFO North Coast Area Director Colin Masson says the recreational closures on the Skeena and Nass systems were to protect early returns.
However, Masson says DFO is also considering additional Chinook closures for both marine commercial and recreational sectors.
Masson says First Nations stakeholders have indicated that there may be some limited harvesting of of Chinook for food, social, and ceremonial purposes, but says they are very supportive of conservation goals.
