Earthquake strikes coast of Chile, officials assessing tsunami risk

A powerful earthquake struck off the coast of Chile this afternoon at 3:54.

The estimated 8.3 earthquake’s epicentre was 54km off the coast of Illapel, in central Chile.

Currently the US National Tsunami Warning Center hasn’t issued a tsunami risk, watch or advisory for the Canadian coast, but officials are still assessing the situation.

According to the latest update, an observable tsunami has been seen off Chile’s coast with waves has high as 15 feet.

Hawaii is under a tsunami watch with waves of up to 1m possibly hitting the Hawaii coast.
