Education Minister Mike Bernier visits Prince Rupert Middle School

Education Minister Mike Bernier toured Prince Rupert Middle School to see the concerns a number of residents have with the building.

Parents say the school has asbestos in the walls, foul odours, and portions of the school sinking.

Bernier says the school is on the province’s radar and that improvements will be coming by 2025.

Bernier also criticized North Coast MLA Jennifer Rice for how long it took her to raise the issue directly to him.

Rice responded by saying many have been approaching the minister looking for answers for quite a while.

Rice also noted it was disappointing to not get a firm time frame for when the school will be replaced.

Bernier says they’ll continue to listen loud and clear at concerns while the ministry works to move forward with the school.

  1. Why not move the students from middle school to the vacant Westview school. If nothing’s ng willbe done until 2025, this would be a good move in the mean time. I would not allow my children to go to a school that was condemned in the pass. The building was built on a former garbage dump and it’s sinking. The water supply is contaminated and the place is falling apart.
