A fawn is lucky to be alive after her mother was hit by a vehicle last Friday.
According to media reports, a man and his family were driving near Kitwanga on Highway 16 when he stopped to help another driver who had hit the deer.
He noticed the deer was pregnant, and performed an emergency C-section to rescue the baby.
The fawn is now recovering at Northern Lights Wildlife Shelter.
Angelika Langen is the manager of the Smithers based animal shelter.
She says she’s never heard of something like this happening before.
While Langen is happy the fawn is safe, she’s concerned other people might mistakenly “rescue” baby deers when they’re actually fine.
Langen says the fawn is recuperating with another deer, and will be released later this fall.
