Passengers flying in or out of the Northwest Regional Airport may soon notice what looks like a small village forming on its grounds.
Airport manager Carman Hendry says nearly 400 Atco trailers used in the Rio Tinto smelter modernization project in Kitimat will be stored on one of the facility’s old runways.
Hendry says the agreement with Atco will help the airport’s bottom line and assist with keeping the rates for the airlines low.
Stacey Tyers is with the Terrace and District Community Services Society, and she says with all those empty trailers, some could be put to use as emergency shelters.
Tyers says there are some barriers and questions that need to be answered beforehand.
She adds that even without services like plumbing, staying inside a trailer is still better than spending the winter outside.
