An environmental group says it’s concerned that the BC government is trying to rush the opening of the Red Chris mine.
Chris Zimmer with Rivers Without Borders says the province issued Imperial Metals an interim permit for the tailings facility at the mine just three days after a review report on the Mount Polley tailings pond disaster.
Zimmer calls the decision to permit what he says is an outdated tailings facility at Red Chris reckless.
Zimmer says downstream fisheries in Alaska could be ruined by a dam failure at BC mines proposed in watersheds like the Taku, Stikine, and Unuk.
Rivers Without Borders says the BC government should implement all recommendations from the Mount Polley Panel report, not cherry pick the cheapest options.
