The Regional District of Kitimat-Stikine has issued an evacuation alert for a wildfire in the Telegraph Creek area.
Officials say the 1.5 hectare fire was caused by a lighting strike in the vicinity of Alkali Lake.
The evacuation alert covers an area west of Sawmill Lake along Highway 51 to Gelorna.
The RDKS says residents in the area should prepare for a potential evacuation:
Locate all family members or co-workers and designate a safe meeting place should an evacuation order be issued while separated.
Gather essential items such as prescription medicines, eye glassess / contact lenses, valubale papers (i.e. insurance), immediate care needs for dependants and identification for the entire family. If you wish, gather keepsakes such as photographs, etc. Have these items ready for a quick departure.
Prepare an emergency survival kit. Listen to the radio and follow instructions from local emergency officials. If you are instructed to do so, shut off water, gas and electricity sources.
Make arrangements for pets and livestock.
Wear clothes and footwear appropriate to weather conditions.
Lock your home.
Follow the routes specified by emergency officials. Do not take shortcuts as they could take you to a blocked or dangerous area.
If you have time leave a note telling others when you left and where you went. If you have a mailbox you can leave a note there.
