The Highway of Tears Initiative is organizing a walk from Prince Rupert to Prince George.
The Cleansing the Highway Walk will leave Prince Rupert on June 1st and will end in Prince George three weeks later on June 21st, to coincide with National Aboriginal Day.
Brenda Wilson is coordinating the event.
She says it’s more than just a walk, as forums will be held in communities along the highway, giving families and the communities a voice.
Wilson says for too long families have been silenced, and the tragedy of missing and murdered women have impacted whole communities.
A draft schedule is in place, and Wilson is coordinating the effort to put the forums together.
Family members of Lana Derrick, Aiela Saric Auger, Olivia Williams, and Ramona Wilson plan to walk the entire distance from Prince Rupert to Prince George, with family members of other women possibly joining.
Many are expected to join for part of the walk.
Brenda Wilson says family members are seeking donations to support their walk, and people who want to help can call her at 250-563-1281.
