Fatal accident on Highway 37 between Kitimat and Terrace

There has been a fatal accident on Highway 37 between Kitimat and Terrace.

The accident happened at the Kitimat River Bridge Hill also known as Suicide Hill.

Kitimat RCMP says the highway is currently closed in both directions.

Chief John Klie of the Terrace Fire Department says they had to use the jaws of life to get the victims out.

There have been a number of accidents along that stretch of highway between the Kitimat River and Onion Lake ski trails, which Chief Klie attributes to bad weather and icy conditions.

It’s unclear how long the closure will take place and no detours have been provided at this time.

Update:

Kitimat RCMP have provided an update on the accident on Highway 37 between Terrace and Kitimat.

Police believe a southbound Chevrolet crossed the centre line into the path of oncoming traffic and was struck on the passenger side by a northbound Toyota.

Police confirm one person died on scene, and three others were taken to the hospital.

Alcohol isn’t considered a factor in the crash, but roads were reported to be slippery with ice and snow.

Highway 37 is currently open to alternating traffic.
