The federal government has announced funding for two Indigenous forestry projects in the Williams Lake region.
Ottawa is providing over $173,000 to the Yune’sit’in Government to help plan an Indigenous-owned milling operation.
The partnership with Tolko Industries and the Cariboo Chilcotin Aboriginal Training Employment Centre helped with training and business plan development to exploit new opportunities in the forest sector.
The second investment of $148,000 helped train Esk-etemc First Nation community members in forest management, environmental monitoring, business development, as well as safety and first aid.
Both projects were funded by the Indigenous Forestry Initiative as part of the government’s Softwood Lumber Action Plan.
The funding was announced by federal natural resources minister Amarjeet Sohi in Williams Lake Tuesday.
