Finance Minister and Premier defend the budget

Finance Minister Mike de Jong and Premier Christy Clark have spent the day defending the government’s budget decisions to pay down debt, keep taxes low, and raise some rates.

De Jong says public health care is not free, and while hydro, ferry and auto insurance rates are rising, BC residents earning $122,000 or less don’t pay nearly as much income tax as those living in Quebec.

Premier Christy Clark says a provincial law requires the government to take every penny of the $879 million dollar surplus and devote it to paying off the debt.

Opposition New Democrat finance critic Carole James says the Liberals deserted the middle class in the budget, deciding to drop a two-per-cent income tax on high-income earners.
