First Nations are celebrating the Federal Court of Appeal decision overturning federal approval of the Northern Gateway project.
President Peter Lantin of the Council of Haida Nation says the ruling confirms that the federal government’s consultation on the pipeline and tanker project fell short of the mark.
The Council of Haida Nation is one of the eight First Nations, environmental groups and labour union involved in legal challenges of Northern Gateway.
Lantin is calling on the Trudeau government to honour its election promises to engage First Nations and impose a tanker ban, in effect ending the project.
Lantin says the court victory wasn’t just for the intervenors, but for all Canadians who helped by contributing to their legal fund, calling it a “celebration” for all.
Enbridge released a statement saying they will consult with their Aboriginal Equity Partners and commercial project proponents to determine their next step.
