First Nations groups optimistic about Trudeau cabinet

BC First Nations groups are optimistic about working with the new federal government, due in part to the appointment of two Indigenous people to high profile cabinet positions.

Jody Wilson-Raybould, Former Assembly of First Nations BC Regional Chief, was appointed Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada.

Hunter Tootoo of Nunavut is Canada’s new Minister of Fisheries and Oceans, and Canadian Coastguard.

Grand Chief Ed John of the BC First Nations Summit says Trudeau’s choices send a powerful signal that represents real change and a new relationship with Indigenous people in Canada.

BCAFN Regional Chief Shane Gottfriedson says he looks forward to working with new Indigenous and Northern Affairs Minister Dr. Carolyn Bennett on on recognition and reconciliation between nations.
